Dear all,
Just for some perspective, I want to share with you all why I emphasize updating the wiki, why editing the wiki is in the Gentleman's Agreement, and why wiki updating is very important.
In the First Black Marches we had very little in the way of organization. People put up names of adventures and roughly who attended and what happened. Quality greatly varied and as a whole the wiki never got updated consistently or very well. One DM would update some but most would never update or add to the wiki. As a result no one really knew what happened in other adventures, what happened in the world and because they didn't know people stopped caring.
At the end, the only people who really got to keep anything from their adventures were the ones who made even paltry updates. As such only the people who took the time to make any decent creations are the ones whom I ported over into this current iteration of Black Marches, Emerald Isle, the Kismet and Crew, and several PCs who became NPCs.
In short, good documentation lets you leave behind a legacy that you can be proud of and something even years later you can look back and enjoy and share with others.
Now Black Marches I wasn't the only campaign to make this mistake, take a look at: http://ethar-dnd.wikidot.com/ , http://birdsnestnaelvich.wikidot.com/ , http://heroesofalvena.wikidot.com/ , and http://thecage.wikidot.com/
With these campaigns, I have next to no idea of what is going on in the world. Naelvich has a few adventures listed and some geography and a few NPCs, but quality is very sparse everywhere. For the rest, it's even worse.
Suffice to say, if people don't care about wiki quality, if they don't care about keeping things organized and looking good, people as a whole stop caring and quality drops greatly.
Now the current Black Marches certainly isn't perfect, but it's pretty good. Soft was able to follow up on the Destruction of the Lion guard even though he wasn't present at those adventures. I wasn't in the "Into the Great Unknown Adventures" but because of the good documentation I was able to incorporate some of those characters and events into my latest adventure. Because of Farris's documentation of the Blood Bros. I'm inspired and have a few ideas of how to incorporate them into some of my later adventures even though I've never actually participated in an adventure with them.
In short, good documentation and wiki standards are catalysts to a rich and vibrant shared campaign and story.
And Finally, yes we're all busy with our own lives and that includes me too. But, that's not a valid excuse. If you're going to DM here, you need to ensure that all important details of your adventure get translated into the appropriate wiki pages. I'd rather have fewer well documented quality adventures than many poor quality documented adventures. Look above to the other wiki sites, their track record speaks for itself.
And remember you're not alone, get the players to help you, require their updates to play in your future games.
Anyway I hope my stream of consciousness made sense to everyone. You all's feedback is welcome.
